Sharon Green

May 7, 1948 — June 11, 2022

OPELOUSAS – Sharon Y. Green passed away at home on Saturday, June 11, 2022, surrounded by friends and loved ones at the age of 74.  A memorial service honoring her life will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Hope Presbyterian Church in Opelousas

She was preceded in death by her father, Herbert James Brice, Jr. and her mother, Mohotah DuBois Brice.

Sharon was beloved by those who knew her. She was born in Heber Springs, Arkansas and grew up in Ashland, Kentucky and Buffalo, New York.  While in Buffalo, she attended high school where she excelled in academics and band, playing the clarinet and serving as a majorette.  Also in Buffalo, she met and fell in love with her husband Gerald “Doug” Green, who survives her.  They were married on September 12, 1970 and would have celebrated 52 years of marriage this year.  They moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where they lived for 10 years and then moved to Opelousas in 1980.

Always well-organized and motivated, Sharon worked several office jobs before settling in at the St. Landry Parish School Board where she worked for nearly 30 years before retiring.  She was the ‘insurance Landy” for many years, single handedly keeping files and policies up to date for all the employees in the school system.  Eventually, she moved to the “Safe and Drug Free Schools” department where she worked until retirement.

Sharon was extremely active in her community including the American Business Women’s Association, Relay for Life, First Baptist Church, PTOs, Girl Scouts (troop leader of 776), Boy Scouts (volunteer for Troop 165), and many other groups.  She was honored to be awarded ABWA’s Woman of the Year in 1990, St. Landry Parish Chamber of Commerce Humanitarian of the Year in 2009.  She was a St. Landry Cemetery Tour founding committee member and served on the Parks and Recreation Master Plan Committee.  Sharon’s greatest joy was that of taking care of her family and being involved in her son’s life by supporting him in Boy Scouts (pushing him to attain the Eagle Scout rank), sporting events, choral events (both singing and conducting), and ministered events.  Sharon was a four-time cancer survivor, a fighter, and a devout Christian.  She loved music, crosses, and of course unicorns.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Gerald “Doug” Green; brother and sister in law Herbert James Brice and Sandra Brice of St. Petersburg, Florida; son and daughter in law, James “Jamie” Green and Ashley Green of Pecaniere, Louisiana; and her two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Catherine Green; as well as many other friends and assorted family members.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but for those who know and share her faith there is the assurance that the moment she stood before her Lord and Savior, she heard the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Pallbearers will be:  Keith Hebert, Tommy Hebert, Vinnie Bullara, Tommy Myrick, Don Fisher, and Don Stanford.  Honorary Pallbearers will be:  Jack Diehl, Keith Normand, Paul Schlette, and Keith Fontenot.

At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Sibille Funeral Home on Thursday, June 16, 2022 from 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers. The family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in her memory.
