nbsp;Opelousas, La Funeral services for Vernon C. Ortego, 86 will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, September 23, 2006 in Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Opelousas with a Mass of Christian Burial and burial follow in Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery, Opelousas .

Rev. Jeff deBlanc will conduct the services.

Mr. Ortego, a resident of Opelousas, died at 1:16 PM, Thursday, September 21, 2006 at Opelousas General Health System in Opelousas, La.
br
Mr. Vernon served his country during World War ll, as a Navy Seaman. After his service to his country, he began a career as a Hardware salesman with Belknap of Louisville, Kentucky for 48 years. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren as much as possible. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include: His wife, Velma Doucet Ortego of Opelousas; three sons: Warren Ortego and wife, Judith Barousse of Houma; Tracey Ortego and wife, Annette of Opelousas; and Rickey Paul Ortego of Alexandria; daughters: Mrs. Denise Ortego Ingram and husband, Allen of Lafayette; and Mrs. Cynthia Ortego Thomassee of Baton Rouge; one brother, Albert Ortego, Jr. and wife, Margarite of Washington; four sisters: Agnes Ortego Fontenot of Slidell; Anna Lee Ortego Dunbar of Opelousas; Helen Ortego Hebert of Washington; and Vera Ortego Prudhomme of Lafayette; 10 grandchildren: Gabe Ortego, Ben Ortego, Jill Ortego, Keith Ortego, Michael Ortego, Monica Ingram, Allison I. Clement, Jennifer Ingram, Ursula Sonnier, and Jeanenne Duhon; and 11 great grandchildren.

Mr. Vernon was preceded in death by one daughter, Norma Sharp; his parents: Albert and Lavenia Trouille Ortego; and numerous siblings.

Visiting hours will be observed on Friday, September 22, 2006, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. On Saturday, visitation will continue from 8 a.m. until the time of services. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home.
