Sr. Elizabeth Marie Gremillion, MSC

December 8, 1932 — August 21, 2025

Opelousas, LA

Sr. Elizabeth Marie Gremillion, MSC was born December 8, 1932 in Moreauville, Louisiana. She died at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home in Opelousas, Louisiana on August 21, 2025 at 11:49 PM.

Sr. Elizabeth Marie was preceded in death by her father, Gustave Gremillion and her mother, Claudia Marie Lacour Gremillion and by her siblings: Gustave, Roland, Henry, Joseph, Margaret, Elaine, Anne, Gerard. She is survived by her brother, Michael Gremillion and his wife, Ginny, and their family, and by the families of her other siblings who remained connected to her throughout her life.

Having experienced an early call to religious life, she entered the Daughters of the Cross in Shreveport, Louisiana on September 8, 1951, and professed perpetual vows on June 22, 1957 in Shreveport. Having been raised in a farming family, she knew the values of patience and hard work, generosity and perseverance. She carried these values with her all her life.

Education was highly valued by her parents, and their dream was for all their children to finish high school and attend college. Sister certainly fulfilled their educational dream for her. Sister received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1969. She received a Master of Arts Degree from Saint Louis University in Saint Louis. And in 1980, she completed 30 additional hours in Educational Leadership from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. Over the years, she attended numerous conferences and workshops related to her ministries. In addition, as an avid reader, Sister was a life-long learner.

She brought the values she learned in a farming family to the classroom. She ministered as teacher and principal in various schools in Louisiana including Monroe, Shreveport, Moreauville, and Marksville. As a Daughter of the Cross, during these ministries, she inspired both students and fellow educators with her devotion and dedication to all aspects of education, in general, and to her students, in particular. Some of her students journeyed with her all her life. In addition to education, Sister also served in leadership roles for her Congregation.

Inspired to follow another vocation call in her life, she transferred to the Marianites of Holy Cross in June of 1997 and pronounced her vows as a Marianite on October 12, 1997. After becoming a Marianite, she continued to minister in education and served at St. Rita School in New Orleans and St. Rita School in Alexandria. She also generously offered her gifts in community service assisting the sisters with medical needs as a driver in New Orleans and in Opelousas. As a driver, she became well known to the staff in the medical offices for her kindness and graciousness to all she met.

Due to health issues, she became a resident at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home on July 16, 2019. At the nursing home she was a prayerful, patient, and compassionate presence to her Sisters and to the other residents. In reflecting on her life, Sr. Elizabeth Marie explained that she dearly loved both of her religious congregations. She enjoyed all her ministries as a Daughter of the Cross and as a Marianite of Holy Cross. Each of her life experiences filled her with gratitude for being able to serve others wherever she was sent. Psalm 138 beautifully reflects her grateful spirit and her dedicated life: “I thank you, Lord, with all my heart; you have heard the words of my mouth. In the presence of the angels I praise you. I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name.”

As Sister enters eternal life, we can hear the Lord say to her: “I thank you, Elizabeth Marie, for answering the call to religious life, for generously serving my people, for faithfully persevering as a religious woman of prayer and compassion. Come and receive the treasure I have prepared for you for all eternity!” To celebrate her life, a wake service will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, from 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM in the chapel at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 AM in the chapel. Burial will take place at St. Landry Cemetery in Opelousas.

We want to express our gratitude to the staff of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home for their care of and attention to Sr. Elizabeth Marie through her years at Prompt Succor. We also want to thank LHC hospice staff who graciously assisted in her care at the end of her life.

In lieu of flowers, the Marianites of Holy Cross request that memorial donations be made to the Marianites of Holy Cross, Congregational Center, at 75520 Hwy 1081, Covington, Louisiana, 70435.
