Robert J.
Stelly, Jr
June 12, 2026 – June 12, 2026
SUNSET – Robert J. Stelly, Jr., affectionately known as “Bob,” a beloved figure in the Sunset, LA community, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and community service but also for the genuine kindness and spirit he shared with all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bob will be laid to rest at the columbarium in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Cemetery in Grand Coteau during a private family service.
During his childhood and teenage years, he worked at his father’s produce company and peddled produce, lessons that served as the foundation for the man he would become. This dedication carried into his distinguished career, which spanned five decades as an insurance agent with New York Life Insurance Company, where he built a reputation for integrity, diligence, and genuine care for his clients. His professional life was marked by a strong sense of responsibility, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him in the industry.
He made many contributions to his country and community. Bob served in the National Guard and was instrumental in starting the T-ball league in Sunset, where he devoted nearly ten years to coaching young players. A talented athlete himself, Robert achieved MVP status in baseball and played a key role in leading Sunset High School to the state championships.
As an avid sportsman and outdoorsman, Bob found his greatest joy in golfing, fishing, and spending time at his camp at Toledo Bend. His passion for baseball never waned, and he was an enthusiastic fan of the Yankees, Astros, and Braves. Bob’s gentle spirit was evident in his love for all animals, especially his loyal Golden Retriever, Beau, who was his constant and cherished companion for many years.
In recent years, Bob faced his struggle with Parkinson’s disease with courage, supported unfailingly by his devoted wife, Lela. Her tireless love and dedicated care allowed him to remain in the comfort of his own home, a testament to their enduring 60 ½-year marriage.
Bob is survived by his wife, Lela Henry Stelly; son, Robert “Robby” Stelly III; daughters, Melissa Thibodeaux (Gary) and Christi Stelly; sister, Edna Richard (Charles); niece, Leslie Duplechin (Randy); nephew, Chuck Richard (Donna); two great-nieces; and a great-great niece.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Stelly, Sr. and Iris Patin Stelly.
The family would like to express gratitude to Louisiana Hospice & Palliative Care, especially Liz Thibodeaux, and his devoted caregivers: Faye Babineaux, Shirley Caesar, and Sam Caesar. Their compassionate care meant so much to Bob and his family.
In honor of Bob’s memory, please consider a donation to Parkinson’s research or to Haseya’s New Beginning Animal Rescue athaseyas.org/donate.
Words of comfort to the family may be expressed at www.sibillefuneralhomes.com. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sibille Funeral Home of Grand Coteau.
