OPELOUSAS- A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Lionel St. Amand on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. in the St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas. Fr. Clint Trahan will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will follow at Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas.
Lionel St. Amand, a cherished pillar of his community, passed away on December 2, 2025, at Lafayette General Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born on June 24, 1946, Lionel dedicated his life to service and entrepreneurship, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
For over 35 years, Lionel fulfilled his duties as a beloved mailman, warmly delivering letters and parcels while forming lasting relationships with residents. His friendly demeanor and unwavering commitment to his work made him a fixture in the lives of many. In addition to his postal career, Lionel proudly owned and operated St. Amand's Grocery in Opelousas for more than 50 years, where he fostered a sense of community and togetherness. His grocery store was more than just a place to shop; it was a gathering spot for neighbors and friends, where laughter and connection were always abundant.
Lionel's dedication extended beyond his professional life. He honored his country by serving in the Army National Guard, demonstrating his patriotism and commitment to service. Traveling was a passion that brought joy to Lionel's life. He enjoyed exploring new places and sharing experiences with those close to him, enriching the lives of his family and friends through these adventures.
Lionel is survived by his sons, Rusty St. Amand (Michelle), Mike St. Amand (Kathy); daughters, Terri Trahan (Terry), Diane Dupre (Donnie), Nicole Dupre (Buddy); 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and 2 more on the way.
Lionel is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara St. Amand; parents, James St. Amand and Marie Richard St. Amand; 2 brothers; 5 sisters, and 4 grandchildren, James St. Amand, Corey Miller, Lane St. Amand and Gavin Dupre.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025 from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas. The rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. by Deacon Dwayne Joubert. Visitation will resume on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Nicholas Miller, Mark Dupre, Ryan Dupre, Tyler St. Amand, Holden St. Amand and Gabe Dupre.
Lionel leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and community spirit that will not be forgotten. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched throughout his remarkable life.
