Leon’s career was marked by hard work and commitment. He was the owner of Sinclair Gas Station in Port Arthur, Texas for many years. in his spare time he served as a floor bouncer at the Southern Club and the Plantation End Club in Opelousas, Louisiana. He concluded his professional journey with a retirement from the City of Opelousas Water Department as the Supervisor in 1980. Leon also took a particular interest in local politics.
Those who knew Leon will remember him as a very loving and caring person who loved his family with all his heart. He always put his wife, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids first. His passions extended beyond his work; he found great enjoyment in horse racing, playing Texas hold’em, deer hunting, squirrel and dove hunting, car racing, and especially following his grandson Chase Zerangue’s baseball career with OC Baseball for many years. One of his proudest accomplishments was coaching youth baseball, a role in which he influenced many young lives and shared his enthusiasm for the game.
Leon is survived by those who held a special place in his life, his children, David Wayne Zerangue and wife Debbie Lavergne Zerangue, and Linda Zerangue-Toten along with her fiancé Raymond Swaggart, who will carry on his legacy. His great-grandchildren— Isabelle “Izzy” Comeaux, Laila Boone, Aliana "Ali" Boone, Ethan Dale Boone, Ethan Lane Comeaux, Luke and Harper Boone, Tom and Kate Stelly, Isaiah “DeeDee” Smith, Ivy Stelly, and Olivia Mitchel Zerangue. They are part of the enduring family he cherished so dearly. He also leaves behind his brothers-in-law, Ronnie Duplechain and his wife Diane. His companion LouElla Kidder stood by his side with unweaving love and support; and a host of godchildren to cherish his memory.
