Julian Kurtz

OPELOUSAS- A private family memorial will be held for, Julian Kurtz, age 87, a resident of Opelousas, who passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Opelousas General Health System surrounded by his family.

Julian Kurtz lived his life devoted to his wife and family,. In addition, he was an active businessman, humanitarian and civic servant. In his youth, Julian attained the honor of Eagle Scout. After graduating from Opelousas High School he attended Tulane, where he was a member of ZBT. He returned to Opelousas and was a senior member of the Kurtz-Casonova Insurance Agency.

As a humanitarian, he was a dedicated member of the Opelousas Rotary Club and instrumental in the formation of the Sunrise Rotary Club, as well as serving as a District Governor of Rotary International. Julian was a member of the Opelousas Masonic Lodge, Humble Cottage Lodge No. 19, F & AM, and severed on the United States Givers fund Board of Directors. He was also a member of the National Guard.

As a civic servant, Julian Kurtz was active in the Opelousas Chamber of Commerce, where he eventually served as president. He was also President of the St. Landry Economic Industrial Development District and served on the Solid Waste Commission.

Julian was the recipient of the Opelousas Chamber of Commerce Citizenship Award and the Service to Mankind Award by the Sertoma Club of Opelousas.

He was an avid bow and arrow fisherman and bowler. He enjoyed collecting coins, stamps and baseball cards.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Iris "Toots" Kurtz of Opelousas; his sons, Edward Kurtz and wife, Maureen of Covington, LA, and Brian Kurtz of Austin, TX; his daughter, Robin Kurtz-Lender and husband, Jeff of Jackson, MS; his grandchildren, Lauren Kurtz, Danielle Kurtz Pittari, Asher Kurtz, Jonathan Kurtz, Leah Kurtz-Lender, Abby Kurtz-Lender and his great-granddaughter, Stella Pittari.

The family requests that donations be made in Julian's honor to the Opelousas Rotary Club (P.O. Box 214, Opelousas, LA 70571.)
