Port Barre- A Christian Mass will be held for Joseph "Tee" Wilton Scruggins, on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Fr. Clint Trahan will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will began at 10:00 a.m. with a Rosary at 1:00 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home in Port Barre.
Joseph Wilton Scruggins, a devoted family man and a respected ironworker, passed away on May 9, 2025, at Ochsner Medical Center in Lafayette. Born on June 12, 1936, he lived a life rich in love, service, and dedication to his family.
Joseph proudly served in the Air Force from October 1957 until 1962, exemplifying his commitment to his country. For over 30 years, he worked as an ironworker, earning the admiration of his peers and the community with his steadfast work ethic and strong character.
He was not only known for his professional accomplishments but also for his vibrant personality. An avid hunter and fisherman in his younger days, Joseph found joy in nature and cherished the moments spent outdoors. He enjoyed trips to the casino with his beloved wife, Betty, with whom he shared 63 wonderful years until her passing. His love for life extended to his garden, where he spent countless hours tending to his plants, reflecting the nurturing spirit that defined him.
Joseph was a proud parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion, where he continued to serve his community and connect with those around him.
He is survived by his son, Barry Scruggins (Sherry), and his grandchildren, Michelle Diaville (Clyde), Trisha Fontenot, Brandon Scruggins (Amber), Brandy Deville, Kyle Deville (Amanda), and Jamie Prescott (Drew). He also leaves behind a host of great-grandchildren, including Nicole, Nicolas, Braylen, Cameron, McKenzie, Mason, River, Madalynn, Conner, Maddie, Jackson, and Weston, who brought immense joy to his life. Joseph is further survived by his sisters, Debra Ortego, Peggy Romero, and Judy Credeur, along with many nieces and nephews.
Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty, as well as his daughters, Pauline (Cricket) Scruggins Fontenot and Donna Scruggins Deville. He was also welcomed into the eternal embrace of his parents, Preston and Lilian Lahaye Scruggins, his brothers Robert, Tommy, Lee, Nookie, Leon, W.J. (Red), and his sisters Lou, May, and Myrtle.
As we remember Joseph Wilson Scruggins, we celebrate a life full of love, integrity, and devotion—a man whose legacy will continue to shine through the lives of all who loved and were influenced by him.
Pallbearers will be Clyde Diaville, Kyle Deville, Gerald Deville, Brandon, Scruggins, Nicholas Diaville, and Connor Scruggins.
