Graveside interment services for Joseph (Russell) Johnson, Sr., age 86, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick #2 Cemetery, 5000 Canal St., New Orleans, LA. He entered eternal rest on Sunday, August 24, 2025 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was a native of New Orleans, LA, resident of Opelousas, LA. Father Augustine “Auggie” DeArmond will officiate the blessing at gravesite.
Russell was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was known to many as Russell, to most as Dad, Paw Paw, Paw and Grandpa.
Russell retired as a master marble setter, longshoreman for T.S. & Sons and delivery man for Bodemuller the Printer, Inc.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 65 years, Valerie Sharp Johnson; his son, Joseph (Rusty) Johnson, Jr., (Barbara) of Pasadena, TX; two daughters, Vickie Johnson Matirne of Lafayette, LA, Tammy Johnson Carriere (Steven) of Opelousas, LA; Five grandchildren, Nicholas Solomon (Alaina) of Lafayette, LA, Lindsay Manuel (her companion Ryan) of Opelousas, LA, Tiffany Spisak (Kolby) of Tomball, TX, Lance Carriere (Brooke) of Arnaudville, LA, Aaron Johnson of Colorado Springs, CO; two step grandchildren, Elizabeth McDaniel of Texas City, TX, Rebbecca McDaniel of Pasadena, TX; Five great grandchildren, Peyton Manuel, Korben Spisak, Luke Spisak, Emma Carriere, Layne Carriere; one step great grandchild, Angel McDaniel; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Now he rests in Heaven with is beloved parents, William, Sr. and Eledia Chandler Johnson; father and mother-in-law, Andrew, Sr. and Vivian Flye Sharp; two brothers, William Johnson, Jr., Thomas Dale Johnson, Sr.; one sister, Glenda Schneider Hunter; one step grandson, Jonathan McDaniel.
He loved fishing, classic shows, old John Wayne movies, classic country music shows and his beloved granddog, Tia.
