James "Jim" Smith

Grand Coteau--A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for James "Jim" Smith on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Grand Coteau. Fr. Aaron Melancon will officiate the Mass. Burial will follow in the St. Charles Cemetery. 

Visitation will be on Monday, in the Sibille Funeral Home in Grand Coteau from 8:00 a.m. till 10:15 a.m. A Rosary will be recited at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.

James "Jim" Smith, born on September 2, 1947, in Church Point, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at his home on January 14, 2026. He led a life characterized by dedication and love, leaving an enduring legacy that will be cherished by his family and friends.

Jim served proudly in the Navy for eight years, an experience that shaped his character and sense of duty. After his military service, he went on to have a fulfilling career as a Licensed Electronic Technician with D H Castille & Castille Service Center and High Tech Electronics, contributing significantly to the field in Louisiana.

He was a man who deeply valued his family, and it is in them that his spirit will continue to thrive. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Cheryl  "Sissy" Smith of Sunset. Together, they raised two sons, Chad Christopher Smith of Sunset and Kevin Michael Smith, who is partnered with Miranda Medinger, also of Sunset. His family circle expanded as he proudly embraced his role as a grandfather to Blake Smith, who is married to Latisha, and Bethany Claire Rivera, who is married to Mario. Furthermore, Jim was a cherished great-grandfather to Paisley Grace, Elijah Michael, Ivan Alexander Riviera Sandoval- Smith, and is looking forward to welcoming another great-grandchild soon.

Jim's interests spanned beyond his professional career, with a passion for fishing, camping, and spending quality time outdoors with his family. His love for nature and adventure left lasting memories that will be fondly remembered.

He was predeceased by his parents, Matthew Smith and Agatha Burleigh Smith Hagius, who instilled in him the values of hard work and a deep love for family.

James "Jim" Smith will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose legacy of love and commitment will forever remain in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
