OPELOUSAS– Gwendolyn "Gwen" Canary, a cherished soul whose laughter illuminated the lives of those around her, left this world on February 8, 2026, at Opelousas General System, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 26, 1956, in Metairie, Louisiana, Gwen was a beacon of joy and affection who touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Gwen was known for her vibrant spirit and unwavering sense of humor, which brought light even in the darkest of times. Her infectious laughter was a gift that created countless happy memories, and her playful nature made every gathering feel special. An avid lover of nature, Gwen found joy in the simplest of pursuits. Her fondness for animals, especially butterflies, symbolized her gentle spirit and her profound appreciation for the beauty of life. Outside, she blossomed in the fresh air, finding peace beneath the vast Louisiana sky.
Gwen was also an extraordinary cook, enchanting her family and friends with her culinary creations, which were infused with her love and care. Gwen's legacy is one of love, laughter, and fierce dedication to family.
Gwen is survived by her husband, William Canary of Opelousas; son, Jason Haberman and wife Betty of Alamo Gordo, New Mexico; daughters, Brandi Pagitt of Lafayette, and Karla Seal and husband Jacob of Broussard; brother, George Baird of Luling; and 3 grandchildren, Emma Pagitt, Averie Pagitt and Hyler Seal.
Gwen is preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and June Baird.
As we remember her, we hold close the beautiful memories she gifted us, the moments filled with her humor and the warmth of her embrace. Though she has departed from our sight, Gwen's spirit will continue to shine brightly in our hearts forever.
