Opelousas--Funeral services will be held for Gurvis Richard on Friday, October 31, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Kevin Lalonde will officiate the service. Burial will follow in the St. Louis Cemetery in Eunice, LA. Visitation will began at 10:00 a.m. until time of the service in the Sibille Funeral Home.
Gurvis, a beloved retired Air Force veteran, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home. Born on April 9, 1943, in Opelousas, Louisiana, Gurvis dedicated his life to serving his country and his family with unwavering love and commitment.
Over the span of 24 years, Gurvis served honorably in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. As an aero controller during the Vietnam War, he exemplified courage and professionalism, contributing significantly to the military mission in service to his nation. While serving in the Air Force Gurvis was decorated with many Honors, MCO Professional Military Education Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, AF Longevity Service Ribbon with 40LC's, National Defense Service Medal, AF Overseas Service Long Tour Ribbon with 10LC, AF Overseas Service Short Tour Ribbon with 20LC's, AF Training Ribbon, AF Outstanding Unit Award, AF Good Conduct Medal with 60LC's, USAF Senior NCO Academy, Jan of 78, Introduction to Date Processing, April 74 General Operations-Optical Operations Courses, October 73; Aircraft Control and Warning Operator-Technician Course, May 68; OJT Trainer Supervisor Orientation Course. Defense Mariterious Service Medal, Mariterious Service Medal with 2OLC 's, AF commendation Medal; Small area Exdpert Marksmanship Ribbon, 30 hours, November 72; Upgrade Training General Subjects Course, November 67; Manuel AC&W Operations for AFSC273X0B Course AFR 27350A; September 59; Management for AF Supervisors; February 64, Reno Defense Sector, May 64. His pride in his service was matched only by his dedication to the values instilled in him during his upbringing on a farm, where he worked diligently picking cotton and sweet potatoes. This work ethic defined him and carried into his distinguished military career and beyond.
Gurvis was known for his very loving nature, endearing him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Jean Maher Richard, of Port Barre, and a proud father to his children, Andrew Richard of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Kristina Kercher of Waukee, Iowa, and his grandchildren, Kyle Brandon Richard and Blake Thomas Richard. He also cherished his close relationships with his sisters, Janice Olivier of Church Point and Joe Ann LeBas, and her husband Tim, of Church Point. These family ties were a cornerstone of his life, nurturing a bond that provided strength and joy.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Josephine Richard, and his brother, Apton Richard. Though his physical presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will undoubtedly live on through the lives he touched and the memories shared by his loved ones.
Gurvis Richard leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and resilience, one that will continue to inspire all who remember him.
Pallbearers will be Lyle Savant, Jake Savant, Kamron Savant, Jason Lebas, Damian Olivier, and Andy Richard.
