Gregory Sylvester, a cherished soul who touched the hearts of many, entered into eternal rest on June 14, 2025, at his residence. Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, on January 18, 1957, Gregory brought warmth, laughter, and a sense of joy to all who crossed his path.
His life was a beautiful melody, filled with cherished memories that he created alongside his beloved wife, Mona. The couple shared countless dances under the stars, where he would affectionately refer to Mona as his “ma lil hunni.” Gregory’s heart swelled with joy during their leisurely coffee mornings on the porch at the camps and crabbing on the beach at Johnson Bayou. These simple moments of togetherness were a testament to the deep bond they shared, one that many admired and aspired to emulate.
In addition to his memorable moments with Mona, Gregory found pleasure in cutting grass, taking pride in a well-manicured lawn, and enjoying the tranquil moments it brought. Alongside his father his favorite pastime included building accordions and playing guitar, that reflected his vibrant spirit. His craftsmanship as a carpenter showcased a creativity and precision that left a lasting impact on his projects and those lucky enough to receive them.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mona Hebert Sylvester of Opelousas; son, Jantzen Sylvester & companion Camryn OBryan of Opelousas; daughters, Lacie Sylvester LeJeune and husband Jeremy of Opelousas, and Blaire Sylvester; son-in-law Durwin Ewing and his children of Lemoyen; brother, Daren Sylvester of Opelousas; Rose Hicks and her husband Nelson Hicks of Opelousas, and Sheila Thomassee and husband Timmy; 6 grandchildren, Kamron and wife Tori, Braylon, Greyson, Aidan, Nadia LeJeune, Hayden Sylvester and one on the way, Nova Sylvester; 2 great-grandchildren, Aubree and Addisyn LeJeune; godchildren, Sheila Thomassee, Bobby Jean Hebert, Kurt Williamson and Ryan Sylvester; his beloved dog, Sudee “dam dog”; and a host of nieces, nephews and in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his son, Cade Sylvester, parents, Earnest and Alice Sylvester; in-laws, Allen and Nita Hebert; paternal grandparents, Zenon and Armina Sylvester; maternal grandparents, Narcisse and Delphine Meche.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 from 12:00 p.m. with an all-night wake in Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas until the time of service on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home on Wednesday evening.
