Frank Mouton

February 14, 1946 — January 17, 2023

OPELOUSAS- Walter Frank “Frankie” Mouton, a retired educator of St. Landry Parish, died peacefully at his home in Opelousas on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, due to complications of cancer. Mr. Mouton was diagnosed with a brain tumor less than four months earlier. He was 76 years old.

A life-long resident of Opelousas, Frank earned his bachelor’s degree in business in 1968 from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now UL Lafayette, and began his career in education shortly after. He subsequently earned his master’s degree in education in 1982, also from USL.

During his 39-years as an educator, Mr. Mouton inspired and guided countless students in St. Landry Parish. For many years he taught math and science to fifth and sixth graders at Northeast Elementary before becoming the JTPA coordinator for St. Landry Parish. In that position, his main responsibility was to oversee and coordinate federal programs within the school system, programs designed to prepare youth and unskilled adults for entry into the labor force.

He always enjoyed traveling with family and friends, especially after retirement, and explored many interesting places throughout North America and Europe, including areas in Canada, England and Italy.

Mr. Mouton regularly attended Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. As a youth, he served St. Landry Catholic Church as an altar boy and later became a lay minister who administered Holy Communion to the St. Landry congregation on Sundays for more than 15 years.

From childhood until his death, he loved the outdoors. As often as he could, Mr. Mouton took advantage of all the hunting and fishing opportunities Louisiana has to offer.

Mr. Mouton is survived by his daughter Michelle Mouton (and husband Matt) of Mount Vernon, Iowa; his son Paul Mouton (and wife Lynn) of Opelousas; his daughter Felicia Mouton Dolese (and husband Eric) of New Orleans; his daughter Julie Mouton (and wife Christina) of Lafayette; his sister Elaine Flanagan (and husband Charles) of Carencro; and his significant other, Lainy Diesi, of Opelousas.  He also is survived by his four grandchildren, Jordan Pennington (and wife Emily), Allyssa Rozas (and husband Travis), Ross Mouton, and Ryder Dolese, and his three great-grandchildren, John David, Amelia and Carter.

He is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 35 years, Barbara “Bobbie” Mouton, as well as his parents, J. Wilson Mouton and Mary Ruth Mouton.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staffs of Our Lady of the Lake, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Hospice of Acadiana, as well as Ironice, Diamond, Penny, Sherline, and Angela for the excellent care during Frank’s final days. The family would also like to thank Amedysis Home Health, especially Eric, Jonathon, Marla and Tricia for their excellent care and many kindnesses.

Visitation will be observed at Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas on Friday, January 20, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6 p.m. and will continue on Saturday from 8 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Bellevue Memorial Park.
