Agnes, a cherished algebra teacher and a community contributor to her hometown of Opelousas, departed this world on May 18, 2025, at her home. She was defined by her generous and nurturing nature, devoted not only to her profession but also to her family, friends, and sorority sisters who will deeply miss her charm and elegance.
Her thirty-three years in the classroom were felt long after her lessons ended. She influenced multiple generations with knowledge and character. She planned annual trips to New Orleans for her students as well as visits to engage with the elderly.
A Southern University alumna, Agnes was an honors graduate earning her B.S. in Secondary Education and General Science as well as her Master’s Degree in Mathematics. She also earned an additional 30 hours of coursework from several institutions across the country. She educated students at Opelousas Junior High for twenty four years and spent the initial nine years of her career at Carter G. Woodson, J.S. Clark, and Opelousas High School.
Agnes believed in the importance of civic leadership and equal rights, serving on Governor Edwin Edwards Commission on Women under the leadership of Mary Landrieu. She recently celebrated her 60th anniversary as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she served on numerous national and regional committees. She initiated individuals such as astronaut, Dr. Mae Jemison and actress, Marla Gibbs. She also was a charter member and first President of the Lambda Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in Opelousas. She worked tirelessly to raise thousands of dollars over many decades to support youth through the Little Miss AKA and Opelousas annual pageant.
She leaves behind her devoted son, Ryan Fenimore Fisher, Esq. of Philadelphia, PA. She is also survived by her brother, Eugene Martel (Angel) of Glendale, AZ, and former sister-in-law Vickie Martel of Scottsdale, AZ. Her family extends to a host of first cousins, including Lawrence Lazard of Opelousas, Rose Evelyn Malveaux of Lake Charles, Mary Ann Ned of Baton Rouge, Mazie Malveaux of Baton Rouge, John Peter Semien (Squeezie) of Milford, MI, Paul and Darryl Martel, and Connie Broussard of Opelousas.
Additional survivors include her sister-in-law Betty Fisher Anderson of Eunice who brought joy to her during her final days, her brother-in-law Harry Fisher of Eunice, her cherished sorority sister and “daughter” Aquanits Zachary of Opelousas whom she mentored and deeply loved, nieces Natalie and Vanessa Martel, and nephews, Jordan and Dominic Martel.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Murphy Fenimore Fisher, her parents, George and Agnes Martel, as well as her brother, George Martel, Jr. She also will join her beloved grand dog Morgan Fisher, whose companionship brought her much happiness.
Her son would like to thank a core group of friends, neighbors, and care givers who supported them over the years focused on Agnes’s wellbeing and the preservation of her cherished home and privacy, including Bernard Lewis, Yvonne Johnson, Marva and George Bell, Merdine Zachary, Negatha Kelly, Rene
Johnson, her essential hair appointments with Debbie Fontenot and special ladies at the nail shop, Hazel Red, Dr. Kalyan Veerina, Theresa Sebastien Fontenot, Eric and Felicia Dupre, the Bienvenu family of Washington, Anitria Gradnigo, and Mary Colomb.
Her resilience, gourmet hospitality, beauty, exquisite taste, care for others, and spiritedness will remain in our memory.
