Ray passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 16, 2017, in Sunset with his daughter and care givers at his side. A lifelong resident of Sunset he graduated from Lafayette High School and went on to receive his B.S. degree in Agriculture from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette). He married Barbara "Bobbie" Boudreau on June 7, 1945 and they were stationed in Miami and Kansas before returning to Sunset after World War II. He decided to work the family farm and raised a herd of 75 Holstein cattle to support the dairy. Most of the cattle were raised on bottles right in the middle of Sunset. He continued working the dairy farm and also began rice and crawfish farming. Ray was still crawfish farming at 95.

He and Bobbie were married for 65 years and enjoyed dancing, going on cruises and having lots of fun traveling wherever the next trip may have been. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and fixing things. Ray loved being a volunteer for the Sunset Fire Department and cooking for the American Legion. The golf cart rides around Sunset to see his pecans and orange trees brought him great happiness over the past few years.

He is survived by his three children, Bobby Hession and wife, Sandra Belle Miller, Brenda Hession Ogden and husband, Joseph, Kay Hession Herpin and husband, Tony; his eight grandchildren, Laurie Leifer Carlson, Brandon Leifer and wife, Jenifer, Linzie Hession Sommer and husband, Justin, Joseph Ogden III and wife, April, Steven Ogden and wife, Melinda, Robert Ogden and wife Destiny, Emily Herpin Wiltz and husband, Ryan, and Melanie Herpin and fiancé Jeremy Hoffpauir; his 19 great-grandchildren, Courtney Leifer, Alayna Carlson, Abigail Leifer, Victoria Leifer, Ashlyn Ogden, Faith Ogden, Wade Ogden, Hailey Ogden, Gabrielle Ogden, Madelyn Ogden, Cecilia Ogden, Layla Ogden, Patrick Ogden, Thomas Wiltz, Sydney Wiltz, Riley Hoffpauir, Reed Hoffpauir, Noah Hoffpauir and Isaac Hoffpauir.
