Mrs. Moreau, a native of Waxia and a resident of Leonville, passed away at home surrounded by her family and friends after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Mrs. Ruby Cecile was a very special woman. She lived a very full and eventful life and she shared the early years of her life with her brothers, sisters and parents whom she spoke fondly about.
After graduating from Port Barre High School, Ruby enrolled at T.H. Harris Vocational School in Opelousas. She had planned to get a certification to become a secretary or possibly go to college to become a teacher. She was told by the schools director that there were too many females in those areas and he thought she had the ability to go into another field. With WWII going on, he suggested Ruby go into the field of electricity. He said she could easily get a job since so many young men were going off to war. Ruby followed the director's advice and became a certified electrician. She got a job working at Ingall's Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. She worked there for four years and was asked to stay on as a supervisor but declined. She served her country while it was at war and where she was needed. What she did was difficult, but she did it for the love of her country. Ruby came back to St. Landry Parish and worked in the Tax Collector's office until she was asked to work in the Registrar's office. She was appointed Registrar for St. Landry Parish in 1958 and held that position for 37 years. This was a position held only by men prior to Ruby's appointment. Ruby loved her job and loved working with the public.
It was during this time that she met the love of her life Harold Moreau. She and Harold married in 1960 and had two sons, John and Jude, who were very special to her. Ruby also loved supporting the LSU Tigers and going to games in Tiger Stadium. She enjoyed going to Grand Isle with family and she loved to hunt and fish. She was generous to a fault and was always willing to help someone in need.
Ruby is survived by her two sons and their families. John Moreau who is married to Faye Campbell Moreau and has one stepson, Brandon Basco. Jude Moreau who is married to Maria Lynn Lanclos Moreau and their three children, Jacob, Alayna and Michael Moreau. Ruby is also survived by one sister, Patsy Morgan of Port Barre, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Ruby was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Harold Moreau; her parents Addie Ryder and Mary Ophelia Pastorick Ryder; her siblings, Veneita Grimmett, Leether Robin , Ivan "Buck" Ryder and Shelby Ryder.
Pallbearers will be Jude and John Moreau, Jacob and Michael Moreau, Gab Robin and Jeff Ryder. Honorary pallbearers will be Lester Bergeron and Eddie Courville.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Ruby's devoted and loving caregivers and the employees of Hospice of Acadiana. Her caregivers were like family and went above and beyond their call of duty to take care of Mrs. Ruby and her family. Everyone at Hospice of Acadiana went out of their way to make Mrs. Ruby comfortable and treat her with dignity and respect. Thank you also to Jonathon Bourque, Mrs. Ruby's nurse, for walking us through those final moments with her on earth. We can never repay you for what you did for Mrs. Ruby and our family as a whole.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donation be made to the Opelousas Area Cerebral Palsy Clinic and St. Jude's Research Hospital.
